A simple, yellow Grateful Dead t-shirt from 1967 is now the most expensive vintage rock ‘n’ roll t-shirt to ever be sold at auction. After a high estimate of $8,000, the shirt sold for $17,640! Another Grateful Dead shirt sold for $15,120! It became the second most expensive band tee ever, and the most expensive ringer T-shirt ever sold! 

Sotheby’s auction house in New York has made a record sale for a vintage band t-shirt after selling an Allan Turk-designed cotton top dating back to 1967 as part of a Grateful Dead vintage memorabilia auction. We talk with a rep at Sotheby’s. 

We get ready for Dave’s Picks volume 40 – which will feature two shows from July of 1990.

We chat with a photographer about his new book and meeting the band in early 1977.

Sotheby’s announces “From The Vault: Property From The Grateful Dead And Friends”

The auction includes stage equipment from all eras of Dead tours including surviving components from the legendary Wall of Sound, and items from crew members “Big” Steve Parish, Lawrence “Ram Rod” Shurtliff, and t-shirts from the band’s longest serving sound engineer Dan Healy. From the Ken Kesey era “Acid Test” days through to the final years – a long, strange trip from counterculture icons to the definitive American band – this auction is a unique opportunity for Deadheads to celebrate the band’s enduring ethos right from the soundboard.

We talk with Richard Austin, Sotheby’s Global Head of Books & Manuscripts, who gives us a rundown on the stage gear, roadie gear, and band gear!

We pay tribute to George Frayne, a.k.a. Commander Cody, alt-country pioneer, who joins the great jam in the sky. Not only was he the frontman for The Lost Planet Airmen but he was Jerry Garcia’s neighbor. The Grateful Dead’s soundman recorded a Commander Cody show which was released last year. The soundman, Owsley Stanley, recorded a Johnny Cash show which will be released later this month!


Jerry Garcia will release GarciaLive Volume 17. The release will showcase recordings from Northern California in 1976. 


We hear Commander Cody cover a Johnny Cash song. Johnny Cash covers a Bob Dylan song. All tracks recorded by Grateful Dead soundman, Owsley Stanley, and Jerry Garcia covers a Bob Dylan song. Mr. Dylan recently announced new tour dates.

Fare thee well, Bob Matthews, who was at the “band meeting” where the group decided to name themselves, The Grateful Dead. Over the weekend, Bob Matthews passed onto the Great Jam In The Sky. 
Among fans of the Grateful Dead, Bob Matthews is a legend. He took banjo lessons from Jerry Garcia, played bass in an early formation of the Grateful Dead: Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions, and the group practiced at his parent’s house.

Bob Matthews produced and engineered for iconic albums such as Live/Dead, Europe ‘72, Skull & Roses, and Workingman’s Dead.

We hear archival audio from Bob Matthews discussing music he helped make.

Dead Air: Week 37

Dell Furano, concert merch pioneer, joins the great jam in the sky at the age of 71. Furano got his start with rock promoter Bill Graham and later co-founded Winterland Productions. His companies made hundreds of deals, from T-shirts and hoodies to Madonna’s skincare products, Celine Dion’s handbags and Kiss’ wafflemakers. Furano got his first gig under the recommendation of the Grateful Dead. When it came to T-shirt concerns, the saying was: “Go talk to Dell.”
We hear something from a show that had the early days of “Shakedown Street” – the show outside of the show. . . 

After being shut down for 18 months because of the pandemic, live music will soon be heard once again at the legendary Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York.
The venue’s owners, staff and fans came together today to celebrate the upcoming reopening with the sign on the marquee saying it all: “The Cap is Back!”

The Capitol Theatre reopened after a year and a half with a free show featuring a Grateful Dead tribute band. We hear the originals play the Cap this week!

Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart was a featured guest on PBS NewsHour. The Rhythm Devil appeared to discuss his drone trio and how they are working to heal people with music. We hear Hart discuss cognitive musical therapy and get what the doctor ordered. . . Good Lovin’
